| | Known for his elegant virtuosity and caressing touch, and hailed as “the most charming…vivid, observant artist...with personality...wit, buoyancy and affection” (The Plain Dealer, Cleveland), whose playing “worked magic” and was “simply beautiful” (Goslarsche Zeitung, Germany), pianist Quentin Kim tours extensively in the Americas, Europe, and Asia, having performed at Alice Tully Hall in New York, Salle Cortot in Paris, Bishopsgate Hall in London, the Harold Washington Library in Chicago, and at the Permanent Missions of Korea, and of India, to the United Nations, and the Residence of the United Nations Secretary-General. He was also invited to give recitals at the International Piano Festival of Gijón (Spain) and at the illustrious Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts Series of Chicago, and he appeared with many orchestras, including the Elgin Symphony, Kankakee Valley Symphony, Michigan Chamber Symphony, and Michigan State University Symphony Orchestra, among others.
Quentin has been the First Prize winner of a number of national and international competitions, among them the Grace Welsh International Prize for Piano, the Joong Ang Music Concours of Korea, the Five Towns Music and Arts Competition of New York, and the Kalamazoo Bach Young Artists’ Competition. He was also a Concert Artists Guild International Competition finalist, a New Orleans International Piano Competition semifinalist, and a Sally and Ted Brown Prize recipient at the Cleveland International Piano Competition.
Much involved also as a chamber musician, Quentin’s concerts include the recent Central and South American tour with members of International Sejong Soloists as cultural ambassadors of Korea.
Quentin’s piano album Romantic Tales (Blue Griffin Recording) has earned him favorable reviews from the media, including the American Record Guide, which praised his “warmth that is always engaging” and exclaimed that “his range of emotion and color is extraordinary.” He is currently a doctoral candidate at The Juilliard School and expected to graduate in May 2010.
“가장 매력적이고…개성과…재치, 쾌활함이 넘치며 마음이 따뜻한…선이 뚜렷하고 기민한 예술가” (미국 클리블란드의 플레인 딜러 신문)로서 그 연주가 “마술을 부리고…다만 아름다울 뿐” (독일 고슬라 일보)이라고 찬사받은 김 정권 피아니스트는 뉴욕의 알리스 툴리 음악당, 파리의 코르토 음악당, 런던의 비숍스게이트 음악당, 시카고의 해롤드 워싱톤 도서관, 국제연합 사무총장 관저, 주 국제연합 대한민국 대표부 대사 관저, 인도대사 관저 등에서 초청 공연을 가지는 등, 미국, 유럽, 아시아 각지에서 널리 연주활동을 하여 왔다. 그는 스페인 히혼 국제음악축전과, 시카고의 마이라 헤스 여사 추모 음악회 시리즈, 그 외 미국 캘리포니아의 미라코스타 대학교, 시카고의 일리노이 대학교, 국립 루이스 대학교, 대한민국의 경원 대학교, 중국의 천진 음악원 등 많은 대학교와 음악원에서 초청 독주회를 가졌으며, 아울러 뉴욕의 제롬 그린 추모 음악회 시리즈, 스타인웨이 피아노 회당, 야마하 피아노 살롱 등 뉴욕의 많은 무대에서 활동중이다. 그는 또한 엘진 교향악단, 캉카키 밸리 교향악단, 미시간 실내 교향악단을 포함한 다수의 관현악단과 협연한 바 있다.
김 정권 씨는 중앙음악콩쿠르 우승, 미국의 그레이스 웰시 국제 피아노 콩쿠르 우승, 뉴욕 주 다섯 읍 음악 예술 콩쿠르 우승, 칼라마주 바흐 콩쿠르 우승 등 여러 국내, 국제 음악 경연에서 수석 입상하였고, 또한 동아음악콩쿠르 차석 입상자이며 미국의 뉴 올리안즈 국제콩쿠르 준결선, 연주예술가 조합 국제 콩쿠르 결선 진출자이기도 하다.
김 정권 씨는 신 수정, 문 용희, 클로드 프랑크, 제롬 로웬탈, 요헤웻 카플린스키, 필립 랏서 (작곡) 교수를 사사하였으며, 유럽-미국 음악동맹 (European American Musical Alliance, 프랑스), 서부음악학교 (The Academy of the West, 미국), 고슬라 국제 연주 연수회 (독일), 프라하 국제 피아노 명사초청 공개수업 (체코), 잘츠부르크 여름학교 (오스트리아) 등에 참가하였다. 김 씨는 예원학교, 서울예술고등학교에서 졸업하고 경원대학교 우수장학생으로 수학 중 도미, 미시간 주립대학교에서 음악학사, 쥴리아드 학교에서 음악석사 학위, 예일대학교에서 예술가 증서를 받았다. 그는 2005년 C. V. Starr 재단이 후원하는 박사과정 명예교우로서 쥴리아드 학교에 돌아왔으며 2010년 졸업예정이다.
또한 김 씨는, 인터내쇼날 세종 솔로이스츠의 단원들과 더불어 중남미 순회공연을 성황리에 마치고, 호암 아트홀과 리움 미술관에서 신년음악회 공연을 가졌으며, 메르쎈 피아노 삼중주단의 일원으로 쥴리아드 학교가 주최하는 알리스 툴리 회당 “실내악의 밤”에 출연하는 등, 실내악 주자로서도 활발히 연주활동을 펼치고 있다. 그는 뉴욕의 허드슨 밸리 피아노 클럽 주최의 “죽은 피아니스트의 사회” 음악회 시리즈에 정기적으로 초청받는 예술가/연사로서도 활동하며, 그의 연주는 미국의 FM방송사인 WXQR, QCLV, WJFF와 WFMT에서 방송된 바 있다. 최근 미국의 블루 그리핀 녹음회사에서 출시된 그의 피아노 독주앨범『낭만 담화 (Romantic Tales)』는, “늘 마음을 끄는 따뜻함”과 “그 예사롭지 않은 감정과 색채의 범위” (미국 음반 길잡이)를 인해 많은 호평을 받았다. 그는 현재 쥴리아드 학교에서 비전공 피아노를 가르치고 있다.
